Trick Or Treat

As a child, I loved the costumes and the candy of Halloween,
but the greatest allure was the fear that buzzed beneath the surface.
The legends of poison-filled candies and razor blades tucked neatly into apples
created horrors which far surpassed vampires and werewolves.
These urban legends turned quiet, genial neighbors into potential devils.
As every neighbor’s door opened,
I would scan the surroundings for evidence of malicious intent.
I once spotted a few hat pins laying on the landing of the stairs just inside of someone’s door.
Adrenaline surged through me, as my childish imagination concocted horrific scenarios.
My skin tingled and my heart raced at the thought, yet, I still took the candy.
